The Northern Wei dynasty was established by a formerly nomadic group named the Tuoba, a clan of the Xianbei people, who came from northern China and likely spoke either a Turkic or proto-Mongolian language, rather than a native Chinese dialect. After 12 years of war, Mulan returns to her hometown along with her comrades, who are shocked to learn that she is a woman. While the original poem doesn’t describe her father as old or ailing, as later versions did, it says that there were no adult sons in the household to take his place. In the tale, Mulan’s father is called to battle, and she volunteers to go in his place. This original version follows a simplified storyline of the tale many are familiar with (without the talking dragon introduced in the animated film, of course). “Anything not contained in this original poem has been made up by much later authors, and cannot be historically substantiated,” says Sanping Chen, an independent scholar and author of Multicultural China in the Early Middle Ages. It’s a short poem thought to have originated as a folk tale in the fourth or fifth century because of references to the period, known as the Northern Wei dynasty, which lasted from the fourth through the early sixth centuries. The earliest printed version of the story still in existence today was first featured in an anthology from the 12th century, known as the Ballad of Mulan. The original Mulan story is quite different from both Disney’s 1998 animated film and the new live-action movie. While campaigns to both support and boycott Mulan took off on social media, other observers were quick to point out the historical inaccuracies of the trailer, particularly in its costume design and architectural setting, which appear to be mismatched for the time period and geographical location of the original story. On the film’s release in September, controversy and calls for a boycott intensified after viewers noted that the film’s credits thanked municipal authorities in Xinjiang, where detention camps and human rights abuses of Uighur Muslims have been well documented. At the film’s European premiere in central London in March, days before its release was postponed, masked protesters gathered outside the screening venue holding signs calling for a boycott and mocking up the film’s promotional poster as an advert for the Hong Kong police. Liu Yifei, its principal star, voiced support for the Hong Kong police on social media during the height of last year’s pro-democracy protests in the city, prompting calls to boycott the film. Yet the film has also faced controversy since its first trailer dropped in August 2019. Caro is also one of only four women ever to have directed a live action film with a budget of more than $100 million, with Mulan‘s budget at more than $200 million. Director Nikki Caro’s version of the traditional ballad has been celebrated as a feminist retelling, cutting out a romantic subplot from the animated film and focusing on Mulan’s character as a formidable woman warrior. And in an era where Hollywood is backing more Asian and Asian-American stories, Mulan is notably the first Disney-branded film to feature an all-Asian cast, with well-known Chinese and Hong Kong-born actors Liu Yifei, Jet Li and Tzi Ma in leading roles. in March were largely positive, with critics calling it Disney’s best live-action offering to date. Initial reactions to the film after its premiere in L.A. The live-action movie has faced a battle of its own: originally scheduled for cinematic release in March, Mulan was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now set to release on Disney’s streaming service Disney+ for $29.99, on Sept. Featuring intense action sequences and sweeping cinematography, the latest Mulan trailer shows the titular heroine vowing to “bring honor to us all,” leading an army of men into battle against fierce opponents.

Botrytis is best managed preventively and that includes using fungicides prior to a damaging outbreak. It is very likely that fungicides will need to play a central role as growers look to hold their crops due to Michigan’s “Stay Home” order. While these strategies are helpful, they are often not enough to eliminate gray mold during Michigan’s spring damp weather complete with overcast skies and fungicides may be needed.Ĭhoose effective fungicides, use their full rate, and apply often. Limit watering whenever possible and water at a time of day when the foliage can dry quickly. Relative humidity can also be reduced by slightly increasing the temperature via heating. Improving air flow to reduce relative humidity is also important. Sanitation reduces the spore load by removing dead and dying plants, leaves and flowers from greenhouse production areas. Preventing and controlling gray mold relies on a multi-pronged approach including cultural and chemical controls. Elements of the storm include overcast, chilly, wet weather, and maturing floriculture crops with flowers. There are times in the spring when Michigan growers face a perfect storm for a Botrytis outbreak. Dead tissue in the plant pot or on the greenhouse bench or floor can support gray mold and spore production. Botrytis usually becomes established and produces spores on older leaves near the moist soil surface and under the plant canopy and flowers. Small leaf spot symptoms may quickly combine into large blighted areas under high relative humidity and wet conditions. Penetration of the plant by Botrytis can be direct or indirect through natural openings or wounds. Infection requires water, which is needed for spore germination. Botrytis spores move by air and are carried to healthy plants where new infections begin. Flowers are especially prone to infection by the gray mold and when the infected petals fall to the foliage, leaf infections result. This pathogen infects many greenhouse ornamentals and is considered the second most important plant pathogen in the world.Ĭommon disease symptoms include leaf spots, blight and stem cankers with the fuzzy gray mold being a key way to identify the Botrytis culprit (Photo 1). The high relative humidity and lack of air circulation often found beneath the plant canopy are especially ideal for the pathogen Botrytis cinerea, commonly called gray mold. The greenhouse environment provides ideal growing conditions for both plants and plant pathogens. And while the design does take precedence, but you don’t want anything too crazy to break the game. They’re always able to watch how this design takes shape and how it’s going to be presented in the game. Whenever we have these design discussions, we try to have the game designers and the game planners involved. The keywords for them were they were “Old heroes from the Lands Between.” So we wanted them to have this heroic and majestic quality. One example is the demigods, the boss characters in the game. It’s a lengthy process, but we think the result is that we get things from each of our artists, working with Miyazaki, to create these things that maybe have not been seen before. This doesn’t just apply to the creatures and the monsters, but basically all of the elements of the game, weapons, equipment, characters. List Elden Ring beta Closed Network Test times and dates Source: Bandai Namco (Image credit: Source: Bandai Namco) The test is being held across five sessions in the middle of Nov. That begins this collaboration between Miyazaki and the design team. And they’re free to interpret that as they will. What tends to happen is Miyazaki will provide some keywords about what sort of creature he wants, and then he’ll give that to the design team. And so we’re currently in the middle of fine-tuning that pacing and that tempo of what you run into out in the overworld. And yet, what defined my seven hours of hands-on time with the Elden Ring closed network test was what many would consider uncharacteristic of a Soulsborne game: tranquility. Of course we’re conscious of the fact that the world is so big, and we wanted it to be filled with interesting discoveries and encounters. It just alleviates some of that stress, and having this burden in the back of your mind of having to travel all the way back to where you’ve previously been. So one thing we did was, in an area with a high level of challenge, we’ve placed these retry points - that’s still a tentative name - and if the player finds that, they’ll have the option when they die of respawning from the retry point or the last checkpoint.Īlso, by opening the map, the player can fast travel to any previously visited “site of lost grace,” as long as they’re not within a dungeon currently. We have our existing corpse run system carried over from previous games, but we didn’t want that to be a frustrating or stressful aspect for the player to have to run all the way across the map to collect their experience points. As we built out the open world, we realized we wanted to alleviate player frustration as much as possible with these large distances involved. I'm no expert when it comes to Adobe Premiere plugins. The other "effect" I use on almost every project is panning and zooming on still footage (the Ken Burns effect). In Premiere, this process is done manually with keyframes, while in Final Cut, it's done much more quickly with a slick UI. Warp Stabilizer can be incredibly slow in Premiere, but with a single click and a few seconds, the "stabilize" feature in Final Cut was done. I didn't spend a lot of time comparing effects in both programs, but the two I did test were noticeably better in Final Cut Pro. This "magnetic timeline" in Final Cut was certainly better for space management on my small laptop screen, but I do wonder what I would have done in a much more complex project. In Premiere, I have a tendency to move "up" in my timeline, putting the footage on higher video tracks so that I don't accidentally delete anything, but in Final Cut, I naturally kept my timeline tidier, and I only ended up using three video tracks. Although both programs are capable of mimicking the other by holding the command and option buttons, the native way they work encouraged me to edit differently. Moving a clip on top of another in Premiere will delete the bottom clip, while it will move the footage out of the way in Final Cut. The timelines work differently in Premiere and Final Cut. This proved to me that my computer was plenty fast enough to play back my relatively small 4K 100 Mbps footage at 2x speed, but Adobe's software is the weak link. When I would add effects to a clip, the footage would be noticeably lower-resolution for a few seconds (while it rendered in the background), but it would always play and scrub smoothly before and after the footage became sharp. Not only did my footage never stutter, but it also scrubbed flawlessly without any additional rendering or proxy building. This is annoying, but I've become used to it.Įditing in Final Cut Pro was shockingly fast. Sometimes, this only takes a few minutes, while other times, it can take over an hour if the project is large enough. To fix this, I've gotten in the habit of making proxies before I start editing any project. The footage may play smoothly for a second in 2x speed, but then, it will freeze up, and when I hit the spacebar to stop playing, the footage will stop and the software will freeze while the audio continues for sometimes up to 10 seconds before the sound stops and the software becomes usable again. This does also happen on some Windows machines I've used, but it's never been this bad. I edit almost exclusively in 2x speed in Premiere, and I'm sad to say that it is completely unusable on my new M1 MacBook Pro. That being said, the project I was working on was abnormally simple. I feel like no matter how gigantic my computer monitors are, they are never big enough for Adobe Premiere, and I've never understood how people can edit a video on a laptop, but for the first time, I found editing in Final Cut Pro very comfortable on my 14-inch laptop screen. I wasn't jumping around from one corner of the screen to the other like I find myself doing in Premiere. I also found that navigating around Final Cut Pro felt a little easier. There are so many extra windows and tools in Premiere that I will probably never use for my simple projects, and this complexity can be a turn-off to new users. There's no doubt that Premiere is far more complicated than Final Cut. After watching a couple of YouTube tutorials, I jumped right into Final Cut Pro without too much confusion. Gas and diesel forklifts use more fuel in cold temperatures due to hard starts. LPG fuel can also be affected by a weakened battery, and in freezing temperatures, fuel regulators can freeze too. Low temperatures can thicken the battery electrolyte, causing it to fail. If your forklift won’t start when cold, it’s important to remember that forklifts that have been sat in the cold can experience issues, particularly LPG and electric models. Just like a car, a forklift battery can struggle to get going in minus temperatures! More on this in our next point…. Another reason your battery might not be working is if it’s too cold. You can try recharging the battery, but if this doesn’t fix your starting issues, then it might need replacing. Firstly, make sure the battery is charged and properly connected. If you’re turning the ignition and there’s no engine sound, only a clicking, then the issue is likely with the battery.
